Watershed Market decided, late last week, to postpone the May 10th & 11th market, per the request of our vendors. We appreciate all of the support you have contributed so far and hope for your continued enthusiastic endorsement moving towards our future markets.

While our next market date has not been set, our goals have remained the same.  Watershed Market continues to strive for an everyday GLASIR©2013 market place. Thus we are taking advantage of this brief hiatus to refocus our energy on becoming better each day—greener, more adaptable, more sustainable, more innovative, more reusable and always local.

Last March, the citizens of Houston proved to us that our goal is within reach and we owe it to you to follow through effectively and sustainably.  To show our gratitude, we are planning to host a Meet & Greet Event for all of our past and future Launchers, Volunteers, Vendors and Sponsors.  It will be a celebration of community, plus another opportunity to get reacquainted and learn more about what we are working on before our next Watershed Market.

For anyone interested in contributing to or becoming a part of Watershed Market, please visit us at our website below and please stay tuned to our newsletter to keep abreast of our current and future activities.

What Does GLASIR Mean?

Watershed Market uses “GLASIR” as an acronym for Green, Local, Adaptable, Sustainable, Innovative and Reuse. These are the principle objectives Watershed Market is striving to achieve. We want to be a market where people can buy and sell local products in a festive, no-trace-left-behind environment.

Let’s take a closer look at what each of these objectives mean to us.

Let’s lead the “Green” movement, Houston! Being “green” means being environmentally conscious, understanding that we are responsible for our actions on this planet and it is up to us to take care of it. Being green could mean carpooling, riding a bicycle or using public transportation; it could mean recycling or outfitting your home with energy efficient light bulbs. Being conscientious doesn’t require a lot of effort and many times, it saves money. How are you green?

Did you know that buying local products helps more than those small businesses? By supporting local, you are stimulating your economy and helping the environment. Locally produced goods are better on the environment because they don’t have to travel miles & miles to reach your hands. And unlike some of the larger big-box stores, when you purchase from a local company, chances are, they will re-invest some of that revenue back into your community. Watershed Market has chosen fantastic vendors from our community: talented craftsmen, engineers, farmers, and artisans ready to launch their goods to the citizens of Houston. If you are interested in being a Watershed Market vendor, sign up here or email vendors@WatershedMarket.com!

For many, change can be scary but the fact is, in order to grow, one must adapt. As Houston becomes more densely populated, public transportation and walkable neighborhoods will become more necessary. It is up to us to positively adjust to keep moving forward and embrace our growing city. Let’s find new sustainable uses for the forgotten spaces in the environment around us.

As a sustainable destination, Watershed Market will be a zero waste zone. What this means is we will provide reusable water bottles and water filling stations. We will have recycling and compost bins and will encourage our vendors to package their goods in recyclable/compostable packages. AMPLIFY the creed: NO TRACE LEFT BEHIND – a movement that fosters considerate, home-grown products and businesses.

Houston is a large, diverse city, with a rich history of wild-catters – blazing the trail towards innovation. Our city is attracting innovative minds and opening many doors to new technologies and practices that will make the world a cooler place for all of us. Watershed Market will showcase the work of many innovators – enriching our city and its citizens. Watershed Market invites any innovator to sell, demonstrate and/or discuss their products and ideas.

Re-Use, Re-Cycle, Re-Store, and Re-Create. Consider using water filters and reusable bottles rather than cases of plastic bottles. Recycle old electronics or donate them to be refurbished and given to people in need. Find a new use for an old item in your house. These are some ways to Re-evaluate little things in and around your live.

GLASIR is the way to go!

Watershed Market, Houston’s First Sustainable Market, Coming to EaDo District

Attraction Launches with Volunteer-Driven “Urban Renewal” On November 16

Houston, Texas – Watershed Market, a new destination showcasing local food purveyors, fashion and jewelry designers, furniture makers, artists and innovators from Houston and the surrounding area, is hosting a volunteer-driven “Urban Renewal” clean-up event of its future home on November 16, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at 2322 Polk Street in the East Downtown District (EaDo). A guest DJ will entertain volunteers during the clean up and, following the improvements, a block party featuring a variety of Houston’s popular food trucks will be held on Dallas Street (between the promenade and Hutchins St.), The occasion will coincide with the groundbreaking of the Houston International Promenade, an initiative to improve and create a pedestrian street that will become an eco-friendly, international destination and permanent landmark in Houston.

“‘Urban Renewal’ is just the beginning as we work to capture the spirit of our future by implementing a sustainable marketplace in the heart of Houston,” says Dr. Audrey Trotti, and president of Watershed Market. “By working with the Houston International Promenade initiative, our goal is to provide a family-friendly, shop and stroll destination. We welcome all volunteers, sponsors and vendors, as it takes all of Houston to create Watershed Market.”

With a spring 2014 grand opening, Watershed Market’s goal is simple: create a curated market focusing on sustainable living and diverse entertainment that will endeavour to become a “No Trace Left Behind” destination allowing for easy access to Green, Local, Adaptive, Sustainable, Innovative, Reuse (GLASIR) businesses and products. Examples of the GLASIR market include demonstrations on rain harvesting, beekeeping and patio-sized planters for edible gardens.

“The community is excited to begin this first phase of many improvements to the Bastrop Street Right-of-Way and the creation of the Houston International Promenade in EaDo,” said Anton Sinkewitch, Executive Director of the East Downtown Management District. “We have numerous, capable and enthusiastic neighborhood partners supporting and working with EaDo to make this vision a reality and Watershed Market is certainly one such partner.”

Local networks of artisans and sustainability professionals have voiced a need for a permanent venue to capture public attention and to highlight local resources. This demand has led Watershed Market to continue beyond “Urban Renewal” with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign (October 23rd – December 4th) to raise funds for the marketplace’s infrastructure. Focusing on the market’s support of Houston’s artists, several original works have been donated as “rewards” to those who pledge support in excess of $100.

Watershed Market is located in the East Downtown (EaDo) District, home of the BBVA-Compass Stadium, the new METRORail Green line (opening 2014) and booming, transit-oriented residential developments consisting of community-based urban development. The grand opening event, Urban Elements: Sights, Sounds and Flavors in East Houston, is scheduled for March 2014. For current information, event notices, vendor descriptions and entertainment applications, please visit us at www.watershedmarket.com.
