Attraction Launches with Volunteer-Driven “Urban Renewal” On November 16
Houston, Texas – Watershed Market, a new destination showcasing local food purveyors, fashion and jewelry designers, furniture makers, artists and innovators from Houston and the surrounding area, is hosting a volunteer-driven “Urban Renewal” clean-up event of its future home on November 16, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at 2322 Polk Street in the East Downtown District (EaDo). A guest DJ will entertain volunteers during the clean up and, following the improvements, a block party featuring a variety of Houston’s popular food trucks will be held on Dallas Street (between the promenade and Hutchins St.), The occasion will coincide with the groundbreaking of the Houston International Promenade, an initiative to improve and create a pedestrian street that will become an eco-friendly, international destination and permanent landmark in Houston.
“‘Urban Renewal’ is just the beginning as we work to capture the spirit of our future by implementing a sustainable marketplace in the heart of Houston,” says Dr. Audrey Trotti, and president of Watershed Market. “By working with the Houston International Promenade initiative, our goal is to provide a family-friendly, shop and stroll destination. We welcome all volunteers, sponsors and vendors, as it takes all of Houston to create Watershed Market.”
With a spring 2014 grand opening, Watershed Market’s goal is simple: create a curated market focusing on sustainable living and diverse entertainment that will endeavour to become a “No Trace Left Behind” destination allowing for easy access to Green, Local, Adaptive, Sustainable, Innovative, Reuse (GLASIR) businesses and products. Examples of the GLASIR market include demonstrations on rain harvesting, beekeeping and patio-sized planters for edible gardens.
“The community is excited to begin this first phase of many improvements to the Bastrop Street Right-of-Way and the creation of the Houston International Promenade in EaDo,” said Anton Sinkewitch, Executive Director of the East Downtown Management District. “We have numerous, capable and enthusiastic neighborhood partners supporting and working with EaDo to make this vision a reality and Watershed Market is certainly one such partner.”
Local networks of artisans and sustainability professionals have voiced a need for a permanent venue to capture public attention and to highlight local resources. This demand has led Watershed Market to continue beyond “Urban Renewal” with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign (October 23rd – December 4th) to raise funds for the marketplace’s infrastructure. Focusing on the market’s support of Houston’s artists, several original works have been donated as “rewards” to those who pledge support in excess of $100.
Watershed Market is located in the East Downtown (EaDo) District, home of the BBVA-Compass Stadium, the new METRORail Green line (opening 2014) and booming, transit-oriented residential developments consisting of community-based urban development. The grand opening event, Urban Elements: Sights, Sounds and Flavors in East Houston, is scheduled for March 2014.
